Truman State University Partners in Prevention
2024- 2025 Strategic Plan
Priority Area 1: Alcohol Use
Goal: Maintain the decreasing alcohol binge drinking rate among all students and decrease the fraternity and sorority life (Greek) binge drinking rate by 3%.
Strategy 1: Provide alcohol-free programs to students during times when binge drinking is most prevalent. We will do this through the promotion of alcohol-free programs during high risk times (Halloween, Homecoming, Reading Day Eve, when establishments offer all-you-can-drink promotions, etc.).
Strategy 2: Educate the campus on the effects of alcohol usage. We will do this by providing risk management programming, and other programming to leadership and/or members of student groups, distributing alcohol education information at live or virtual campus events (e.g. CHEERS tables, fraternity and sorority life new member orientation, SPHA events, Engage, Residence Life programming, etc.), and promoting alcohol awareness programs (e.g., College Behavior Profile, ASTP, BASICS, Agreed Resolution program, etc.). We will place an emphasis on fraternity and sorority life since MACHB results indicate that they have the highest binge drinking rate on campus.
Priority Area 2: Alcohol and Drug Sources
Goal: Continue to implement and promote programs to address responsibility and accountability amongst alcohol and drug sources.
Strategy 1: Promote and teach the signs of alcohol poisoning and drug misuse to students along with how to react when they encounter it. We will do this by implementing and promoting Engage, ASTP, and other similar programs, to students and the campus community. We will also educate on the dangers of alcohol poisoning (and how to identify it during heavy binge drinking times) and cannabis misuse.
Priority Area 3: Mental Health
Goal 1: Improve the overall mental health and well-being of Truman students.
Strategy 1:
- Provide Ask, Listen, and Refer to the campus community.
- Provide a minimum of 10 mental health on campus/virtual courses/educational activities (QPR, Mental Health First Aid, Engage, campus mental health presentation(s), etc.) per academic year.
- Host programs focusing on positive coping mechanisms for mental health.
Goal 2: Ensure that students are aware of resources on campus for assistance.
Strategy 1: Increase awareness of campus mental health resources by holding various events.
- Residence Life will host individual conversations with students during first semester on accessing mental health resources on campus. Residence Life will also host house meetings discussing how to get help for a friend thinking about suicide or experiencing other mental health challenges.
- Maintain programs that equip students to refer friends to resources and tell University officials about concerns.
- Increase awareness of the 988 suicide and crisis lifeline.
- Educate students about affordable assistance options on campus, including the sliding scale application at the University Counseling, Student Health Center, and virtually via Telehealth.
Priority Area 4: Coalition and Community Involvement
Goal: Train coalition members and campus community partners to increase PIP involvement.
Strategy 1: The coalition will partner with campus offices, committees, and organizations to attend educational events and receive training that promote the MOPIP mission including the annual Meeting of the Minds (MOM) conference.
Strategy 2: Coalition members will support and raise awareness for certain awareness weeks throughout the year (e.g. National Suicide Prevention Week, Mental Health Awareness Week, etc.).
